Bonus: Black Girl Joy

July 23, 2017

Star Johnson writes musicals, but right now she's getting ready for a concert at New York Musical Festival called Black Girl Joy: Star Johnson in Concert.

We talk about being a black woman who writes musicals, we just plain nerd out some, and we speculate about the mysterious picture Darren Criss dropped on Friday. What's coming on Wednesday? When will we have an Elsie announcement? Who will be performing? (We have no idea, but that doesn't stop us from talking!)

23: Mardie Baldo, Gleek Goddess

July 17, 2017

Mardie Baldo has been a fangirl ever since she fell in love with Star Trek as a child. Our conversation is long and wide-ranging, but the highlight is her touching story about what Darren Criss meant to her husband. Thank you so much for sharing that, Mardie!

Also, an Elsie Fest 2017 update from Darren Criss himself, via Julie James (thanks for texting Darren for us, Julie!) my experience at New York Musical Festival, and a review of Come From Away.

20: Tony Winning Orchestrator Larry Hochman

June 5, 2017

Larry Hochman won the Tony for Book of Mormon and has been nominated seven other times, including this year for Hello Dolly! We talk about how orchestration works, what it's like to orchestrate a new show vs. a revival, and what it's like to sit at the Tony Awards when you're nominated against three of your friends. Plus, what Larry would like me to ask Megan Hilty.

Also, my thoughts on Darren Criss and the naked picture. Please send me your thoughts on the naked picture. If you liked it, was it just because you could objectify him? Was there some other reason? If you didn't, why not? I'm curious, and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Send email to elsiefestpodcast at gmail dot com.
